Chapter twenty-six
“Clean as a whistle.” The announcement came from Pierre Dunedin, a computer technologist and all around tech geek employed by the FBI. Shay had commissioned him to sweep their office for a bug on the Bureau’s time. It wasn’t like she could make Holloway any more suspicious of her than he already was.
She snatched up the phone handset, gave it a look. “This too?”
“The phone is the big no-brainer.” Pierre’s eyes lit up. He loved nothing more than to demonstrate his abilities. He unscrewed the telephone mouthpiece on the ancient-looking landline and held it up for her to inspect. “If there was a drop-in transmitter, it’d be in this compartment. That thing gets its power from the phone itself, then transmits a crystal clear signal to the receiver.”
“Impressive.”
“Now, if this was a cordless, we’d have other things to look at, like wireless interception, mobile receivers, channels, wavelengths and so forth.”
“My ears are bleeding with your tech-speak,” Shay complained. But she knew he loved that too. “What about the rest of the joint? Lamps? Lights? The works?”
“I swept your walls and overhead lights for electrets, light switches and sockets for FM transmitters.” He walked toward the wall, tapped on an old intercom system. “We don’t use these anymore, but for the right occasion, these things make splendid transmitters. I clipped all the wires inside yours, just in case.” He gave a good-natured shrug. “Naturally.”
“Naturally,” she echoed him, smiling.
“I once planted a mic that was three-sixteenths of an inch across—that’s all. Perfect transmitter.” Pierre’s eyes glazed over as he waxed poetic over his triumph. His former illegal life as a phone phreak and wiretap artist had earned him his position at the Bureau. His current job probably wasn’t as much fun as his former life, but it kept him out of prison. He snapped out of his moment, got serious again. “Here’s what not to do, now. Don’t pick up any stray ink pens. Don’t swap office supplies. Don’t order in takeout food.”
She shriveled her nose. “Wiretap in my egg foo yung?”
“I’ve seen weirder,” he whispered.
“Note to self, avoid Chinese food.”
“Also, take your meetings in the conference room—it only takes a split second and a bit of chewed gum to mic anything.”
“And avoid gum chewers.” She amended her earlier note. She grinned brightly. “You’re amazing, you know that?”
“I do know that.” He gathered his stuff. “I’ll sweep your office twice a week until you tell me otherwise.”
Shay frowned. “You think that’s necessary?”
He shrugged. “Depends. What are you working on?” Pierre was practically salivating. “Anything good?”
“Right now, no.” Shay saw his disappointment. “But if it gets good, you’ll be the first one to know, I promise.”
“Thanks, boss.” He happily exited their office, passing Kate on her way in.
“Two things.” Shay clapped her hands together. “First of all, we’ve got a clean office. I just had Dunedin sweep the place. We’re good for this day, at least.”
Kate set her stuff on the desktop, hung up her jacket. “How do you know he isn’t one of them?”
“All this talk of them again.
